Top-notch Law Firm is seeking a Senior SQL Administrator for their Newark office. This position is an integral part of our Information Technology team (IT) and is responsible for the support, migration, management, maintenance, availability, and stability of the firm's SQL Server environment, to ensure optimal performance of the firm's databases and applications.
This hands-on senior technical position plans and executes database migrations, backups, maintenance and optimization plans, monitoring, performance tuning, availability and recovery tasks, troubleshooting, documentation, and data management/integration using third-party and native Microsoft SQL technologies.
The Senior SQL Administrator will regularly interact with the firm's business units, management and IT teams, and outside vendors. Additionally, the Senior SQL Administrator will perform technical troubleshooting activities and acts as the point person for resolution of application and database related service tickets. This position uses a broad knowledge of IT disciplines including Microsoft SQL Server, Failover Clustering and Always On Availability Groups, SSIS, SSRS, Transact-SQL, Backup and Storage methodologies and tools, and scripting and automation. The Senior SQL Administrator position will also use their knowledge of SQL to help deliver data integrations. This position reports to the IT Applications Manager.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Support, Management and Maintenance
  • Creating, monitoring, and maintaining scheduled maintenance plans to ensure that databases are optimized, regularly backed up, and free of inconsistencies
  • Performing scheduled maintenance and support release deployment activities after hours
  • Managing SQL Server databases through multiple product lifecycle environments, from development to mission-critical production systems
  • Deploying database change scripts provided by third-party vendors
  • Providing 24x7 support for critical production systems
  • Performing database maintenance as required
  • Monitoring and managing storage for all applications
  • Installing upgrades and Windows Security Updates
  • Monitoring and managing server and database security and permissions
High Availability and Disaster Recovery
  • Creating, configuring, and managing SQL Clusters, Always On Availability Groups, Always On Availability Group listeners, and all related dependencies
Backup and Restore
  • Ensuring all database servers are backed up in a way that meets the business’s Recovery Point Objectives (RPO)
  • Performing database backups and restores and testing to ensure that the firm's Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) is met
  • Working with the Network and Infrastructure teams to plan, implement, and manage the backup strategy using native SQL technologies and/or third-party backup solutions
Migration
  • Creating, managing, and executing the firm's database migration plan to migrate the firm's production databases from older instances to newer highly available and redundantly protected instances.
 
Monitoring and Performance Optimization
  • Creating, modifying, and maintaining solutions to monitor databases, servers, and processes for proper performance using native Microsoft and third-party monitoring and alerting technologies to ensure high levels of performance, availability, and security
  • Modifying SQL Server monitoring utilities to minimize false alarms
  • Determining the most effective way to increase performance including hardware purchases, server configuration changes, or index/query changes
  • Tuning T-SQL queries to optimize performance
  • Provide performance metrics using DMV queries
SQL Development
  • Help write and optimize in-application SQL statements to help improve application performance.
  • Create functions, scripts, stored procedures and triggers to support application development.
  • Design and develop T-SQL procedures, query performance tunings, and SSIS packages.
  • Design and execute data extraction, transformation and loading using ETL tools.
  • Translate business requirements into SQL based solutions
  • Participate in development and creation of Data warehouses.
Troubleshooting
  • Troubleshooting SQL Server service outages as they occur, including after-hours and weekends
  • Troubleshooting SQL statements by viewing execution plans and tuning queries
  • Tracing and auditing SQL Server activity
  • Ensure performance and recovery of SQL database events using Transaction Log troubleshooting techniques
Documentation and Knowledge Sharing
  • Providing technical documentation, mentor-ship and cross-training to peers and team members.
  • Creating and Maintaining documentation of the firm's database environment
Data Management and Integration
  • Writing new scripts and modifying existing scripts to meet automation goals
  • Developing and Maintaining the firm's SQL Reporting environment
  • Developing, maintaining, and documenting Data Integration automation
Required Experience
  • Five years SQL server database experience or database administration experience in a corporate environment or equivalent proven work experience
  • Expert level experience with Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Transact-SQL, Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio, Microsoft Windows Server 2003-2016, SQL Server Database Administration 2005-2016
  • Proven work experience troubleshooting transaction logs, viewing execution plans, tuning queries, and indexing strategies.
  • Proven work experience and familiarity with best practices, technologies, concepts, and configurations relating to Backups/Restores, Disaster Recovery, High Availability (AAG, Clustering), Monitoring and Alerting, Data Integration, and System Optimization
  • Familiar with SQL Reporting services including creating, modifying, and managing custom reports
  • Proven work experience with large-scale database migration projects, tools, and methodologies
  • Understanding of VMWare and storage (EMC, replication) technologies is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Change Management principals and processes is a plus.
  • Law Firm experience is a huge plus, but not required.
